Reducing Vehicle and Catalytic Converter Theft on Commercial Lots

Vehicle crime is the most common loss our Clients experience, and commercial lots absorb most of it. A fleet yard holds dozens of targets in one place. An employee lot empties predictably at shift change. A dealership row is lit, visible, and completely unattended after 7:00 p.m. Thieves are not solving hard problems here; they are picking the lot with the fewest obstacles.

Start With Lighting and Sightlines

Walk the lot after dark, not at noon. Find the dead pole lights, the corner behind the dumpster enclosure, the row screened by landscaping that has grown three feet since it was planted. Most lots have two or three specific pockets where nearly all activity happens, and fixing those is cheaper than any service you can buy.

Make Entry and Exit Deliberate

Every additional decision a thief has to make raises risk for them. Gate the lot where possible. Reduce the number of open vehicle entrances at night. Park high-value units where they are visible from the street or from a staffed entrance rather than at the quiet back fence.

Unpredictable Presence Does the Heavy Lifting

A converter cut takes minutes. Coverage only matters if the timing cannot be predicted. Mobile Patrol with randomized intervals and varied approach routes removes the confidence a thief needs, and a marked vehicle making a slow pass is often the entire intervention. For lots with sustained losses, a stationed On-site Officer during peak hours ends the pattern outright.

Document Everything, Including Near Misses

Plate numbers, timestamps, photos of a vehicle circling the lot, a person walking the rows at 2:00 a.m. — these are the details that let law enforcement connect a series and let your insurer take a claim seriously. Officers report near misses, not just completed incidents, because the near misses are the early warning.

Coordinate With Your Own People

Tell employees where to park, who to call, and what to report. Give the Officer a contact who answers the phone overnight. Coverage works best when the property's staff and the security Team are running the same plan.
