How Fire Watch Keeps Construction Projects on Schedule
An impaired alarm or a hot work permit can stop a job site cold. Trained Fire Watch Officers keep the project compliant and moving without a shutdown.
On an active construction site, fire protection is almost never fully online. Sprinkler mains get charged in phases, alarm devices are installed ahead of programming, standpipes are temporarily out of service, and hot work happens daily. Each of those conditions triggers an obligation. Handled properly, they are routine. Handled poorly, they produce a stop-work order in the middle of a schedule with no slack in it.
What Triggers a Fire Watch on a Job Site
The common triggers are an impaired or partially installed fire alarm system, an out-of-service sprinkler system, cutting or welding under a hot work permit, occupancy of a partially completed structure, and any condition the Fire Marshal identifies during inspection. Requirements come out of the International Fire Code as adopted in Washington, along with NFPA guidance and whatever the local jurisdiction adds on top.
The Job Is Patrol, Documentation, and Notification
A Fire Watch Officer is not a body in a chair. The role is continuous patrol of the affected area at the interval the jurisdiction sets, checking for heat, smoke, odor, and hazards; maintaining a written log with times and locations; and having the authority and the means to notify 911 and evacuate immediately.
