4 Tips for a Safe and Secure Halloween

Each year, Halloween brings in a notable increase in mischief. Property crimes, in particular, are more common on Halloween than any other day of the year. In a ten-year claims data analysis, the average number of insurance claims for Halloween damage was 133.8 compared to the average claim of 119.5 on all other days. If you're a business owner, it's important to take steps to protect your property during this high-risk holiday. Here are four tips to help keep your property safe this Halloween:

1. Lock up Tight

Halloween is a popular time for "smash and grab" robberies. Make sure to double check all windows and doors are locked and secured before you leave. Remove heavy objects such as rocks from the premises, especially near windows and vehicles. Trees and other vegetation should be trimmed to reduce areas of concealment, especially near points of entry. Special equipment should be secured such as vehicles, ladders and generators.

2. Set your Alarms

If you have an alarm system, set it before you go out. And if you don't have an alarm/surveillance system, now might be a good time to consider investing in one. Automated systems serve as an excellent and cost-effective long-term deterrent to criminal activity.

3. Make Sure Your Business is Well Lit

Consider putting up extra lighting around your property. Ample lighting will deter criminals and make it easier for law enforcement to spot any suspicious activity. Motion-sensitive lighting at key Avenues of Approach (e.g. main entrances, driveways, alley entrances) serves as an extra deterrent.
